Hello Friends and Supporters:

I hope you are all staying warm on this chilly January day.

On Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 7 PM Minnesotans will gather together in their local schools and government centers to exercise one of our most important rights: the right to organize and express ourselves politically through the precinct caucus system. Precinct caucuses mark the beginning of the campaign season in our great state and this is the opportunity to get involved at the grassroots.

Please plan on attending your local caucus. If you don’t know where your precinct meets please go to the Minnesota Republican Party website to find your caucus location. http://mngop.com/inner.asp?z=16

This year’s elections are critical for our state and federal government. As we have seen in the elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and Massachusetts people are rejecting the big government ideas of the left. The people of this country know what freedom is and have proven this past year that they plan on keeping our country free. We have an opportunity here in Minnesota to also reject the over regulation, overspending and taxation that is making it difficult for hard working Minnesotans to enjoy the prosperity that was intended when this great country was founded.

Attending your local caucus is the first step in being involved in deciding who will be endorsed as your candidate in November’s general election.

I highly encourage you all to attend and to please become delegates for Gretchen Hoffman. Your support is crucial for victory in November! I will be a strong voice for Senate District 10 in our state legislature.

So, please mark your calendars and plan to attend your precinct caucus. It’s fun and easy!

This is the kick-off of a very exciting campaign season. Conservatism is on the ascendancy and now is the time to let your voices be heard!

Thank you! Hope to see as many of you as possible at the caucuses.

Onward to Conservative Victory in 2010!

Yours,
Gretchen

Hi everyone,

As many of you know the Perham School referendum failed and the kids were very disappointed. I want to share with you all what our Perham Teenage Republicans are spearheading to help the school. They are taking the energy of disappointment and putting it to productive and positive effort. If you know of any other kids who would like to participate in this project please have them contact the kids….info in the letter below.

This is the letter to the Editor that was published in yesterday’s EOT Focus….from their own words this is a great explanation of what the kids are trying to do. I talked about this yesterday with Scott Hennen on the radio. This will be an ongoing project. We have arranged with many of the Perham businesses for the kids to set up their gift wrapping stations in their stores. I will send a schedule of those locations and times as soon as it is finalized…the kids will also have a facebook group with details.

This just goes to show, how community spirit, self reliance, and free market, positive solutions can make a difference. When we rely on the ‘government’ to fix all of our problems we just get more mired down….but when we rely on ourselves we can see swift and positive results. Here’s the letter from the Perham Teenage Republicans:

To the editor:

As I’m almost certain most of you have heard, the levy didn’t pass. I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about it, but this isn’t a “make you feel sorry for us” letter. Some of us students are actually trying to do something about it. We don’t want to come off as beggars. We are young and willing to work. The holidays are coming around and many of you may need your gifts wrapped. Call us up and arrange a time. We’ll do it for a free-will donation. When Jack Frost decides to show up and bring snow with him, we’ll shovel your driveway for you. We are “Students Creating Solutions” and we want to help you and our school. We will be wrapping gifts on Dec. 12 at Pamida from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you want to arrange an appointment, leave a message for Mark at 218-298-0122 or send an e-mail to teenage.republicans.of.perham@hotmail.com.

Mark Schumacher
Students Creating Solutions

Hat’s off to all of the “Students Creating Solutions” for taking the intiative and making a positive impact on our community. So, if anyone has packages they want wrapped please do not hesitate to contact the kids. They are eager to work! Please forward this to as many people as possible to get the word out!

Yesterday I had the extreme privilege of attending a couple of events in our community. First I attended the Perham Rotary lunch meeting as a guest of Jon Staebler. The ever-dynamic Scott Hennen was the keynote speaker. The Rotarians demonstrated great hospitality to all their guests, pride in their community, and good-natured humor. Best of all we sang Christmas Carols with the accompaniment of Russ Bunker, who is one of the most gifted pianists I have ever heard. A huge thank you to all the Rotarians for what you do for our community! Oh, and if you haven’t had a Chimichanga at Lake’s Cafe in Perham you don’t know what you are missing.

Next I attended “A Taste of Perham”, hosted by Dean’s Country Market. Dean and Kathy Simpson and all of the Dean’s Country Market family cheerfully served a vast array of food to sample. A free will offering basket was at the door, with all of the proceeds benefiting the area Food Shelf and the Giving Tree, and it was brimming with donations. I am pretty sure most of Perham was in attendance because we never saw the end of the line. The Perham High School Choir, led by Kevin Kosiak, serenaded us with Christmas Carols…WOW, what talented kids we have in our district! Santa was there checking his list….one little girl was over heard to say, when asked if she’s been good, “Well, most of the time I’m good.” Oh, the honestly of the little ones. I even got to have a visit with Santa! Thank you Dean and Kathy and all of your wonderful staff for putting on this event. It was a great evening…and Dean even had on a dress shirt and tie…he cleans up real nice!

Topping the day off….I was so privileged to attend the New York Mills Community Christmas Program. The atmosphere was festive and smiles abounded. The simplicity of people coming together to celebrate the birth of Christ and old fashioned community pride was felt everywhere. From the depiction of the Nativity, to the singing of Christmas Carols the true meaning of Christmas will never be lost when we remember to keep Christ in Christmas. It was a magical night that in its simplicity filled your heart with joy in this most blessed Christmas season. Thank you to all the organizers and participants for making it a very memorable evening.

Since my decision to run for state office this past summer I have had many people ask my why I would want to run for office. I can answer that very simply:

The time is now to serve.

I am a Minnesotan who loves living in this state and wants our state to prosper and be a better place for our children to settle and to raise their families.

There are many issues facing our state and our country. In order to ensure that we overcome the economic troubles our state is facing both in the public and the private sector we must use free market principles to limit the scope of government in private business, reduce taxes, and make Minnesota a more attractive state for business. That is what is needed now to grow jobs and achieve economic security.

Currently Minnesota is ranked as 43rd out of 50, according to The Tax Foundation, for business friendly tax climates. http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/25229.html Which means that there are 42 other states that have better business conditions than MN. Is it any wonder that companies are leaving our state for other states and taking good paying jobs with them?

We must immediately cut corporate income taxes and onerous regulations. This alone will entice businesses to locate in Minnesota. With business comes jobs!

Minnesotans are hard working, dedicated individuals who would rather work and take care of their families than to rely on an overbearing state government for their sustinance. Turn lose the entrepreneurs in our state and instead of being one of the last states to recover Minnesota will be one of the first. One only has to look to California to see what unbridled spending, taxation, and regulation will do to a state! We are not California, we are Minnesotans and we believe in the people knowing better, not the government.

In the words of Ronald Reagan, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

“It’s a Matter of Priorities” to be campaign theme

Long-time northwest Minnesota resident Gretchen Hoffman today announced her candidacy for State Senate. Hoffman, of Vergas, will face-off for the Senate District 10 seat against Dan Skogen, DFL-Wadena, who is serving his first term.

“I’m running for State Senate with a clear focus on the priorities that impact our region: job creation and economic development, budget/tax reform, health care and education,” Hoffman said.

At her campaign kick-off event in Fergus Falls, Hoffman was introduced by Mary Hauser of Fergus Falls, who stated, “Gretchen Hoffman is an accomplished leader with the decision-making skills we need. She listens, learns and acts on her convictions, unlike so many in politics today that waffle and are afraid to tell you where they stand. She’ll be a great State Senator.”

In Perham and Wadena Sue Nelson told a large group of supporters, “Gretchen Hoffman represents a new breed of leader and concerned citizen who is willing to dedicate her time and talents to move Minnesota forward. She is exactly what we need in St. Paul.”

As a former Critical Care Nurse who worked at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Dakota Medical Center and Perham Memorial Hospital, Hoffman has extensive health care experience. She is a small business owner and member of the Board of Directors of GPK Products, Inc., a family-owned manufacturer of PVC water and wastewater fittings, which employs 140 people.

“Last year, Dan Skogen and the DFL-dominated legislature failed to even meet their constitutional responsibility to pass a budget. As a result, Governor Pawlenty did the job, and now those same politicians are blaming him for cleaning up their mess. With families struggling, our economy sputtering, job growth lagging and politicians doing nothing but pointing fingers, the people of District 10 deserve better.” Hoffman stated.

Hoffman has an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, and received her associate degree in nursing from Brainerd Community College. She and her husband Virgil have been married 27 years and have three adult sons.

Hoffman will be seeking Republican endorsement in the spring of 2010. Her campaign website is www.gretchenhoffman.com and she can be reached at 218.342.2010 or at contact@gretchenhoffman.com.
